Nicolaus Copernicus and heliocentrism

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was a Polish astronomer best known saying that the earth was not the center of the universe. Writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said,
"Of all discoveries and opinions, none may have exerted a greater effect on the human spirit than the doctrine of Copernicus. The world had scarcely become known as a round and complete in itself when it was asked to waive the tremendous privilege of being the center of the universe."  (Wikiquote)
Science historian Alistair Cameron Crombie said,

Max Planck and metaphysics

Max Planck (1858-1947) was a German physicist best known for his early contributions to quantum mechanics. Albert Einstein said,
"[Planck] showed convincingly that in addition to the atomistic structure of matter there is a kind of atomistic structure to energy, governed by the universal constant h, which was introduced by Planck. This discovery became the basis of all twentieth-century research in physics and has almost entirely conditioned its development ever since." (Max Planck in Memorium, 1948)

Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) was British physicist best known for helping establish the nuclear structure of an atom. Physicist Freeman Dyson said,
"Rutherford's discovery was the beginning of the science that came to be called nuclear physics... The twenty years between 1909 and 1929 were the era of tabletop nuclear physics... Erwin Schrodinger and consciousness

Erwin Schrodinger (1887-1961) was an Austrian physicist best known for his contributions to quantum mechanics and particle waves. Physicist Brian Greene says,
"Just a few months after de Broglie's suggestion, Schrodinger took the decisive step... by determining an equation that governs the shape and the evolution of probability waves, or as they became know, wave functions." (The Elegant Universe, 1999)
Jeremy Bernstein says,

Niels Bohr (1885-1962) was a Danish physicist best known for his theory that electrons orbit around the nucleus of an atom. John Start Bell said,
"Bohr seemed to think that he had solved this question. I could not find his solution in his writings. But there was no doubt that he was convinced that he had solved the problem and, in so doing, had not only contributed to atomic physics, but to epistemology, to philosophy, to humanity and general." James Clerk Maxwell and the history of science

James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was Scottish physicist best known for the classical theory of electromagnetism. As a result, Maxwell helped establish the mathematical relationship between electricity and magnetism. Physicist Freeman Dyson says,
"Maxwell discovered his equations, which describe the behavior of electric and magnetic fields under the most general conditions, in the year 1861, and published a clear and definitive statement of them in 1865. This was the great event of nineteenth century physics, achieving for electricity and magnetism what Newton had achieved for gravitation two hundred years earlier." History of science
