John Lennon (1940-1980) was an English musician and founder of the Beatles. Beatles member, Paul McCartney said,
"I definitely did look up to John. We all looked up to John. He was older and he was very much the leader; he was the quickest wit and the smartest and all that kind of thing." (Interview with Playboy magazine, 1984)
The rest of this post is some quotes from Lennon.

Peace

"It was just a gradual development over the years. Last year was 'All You Need Is Love'. This year it's 'Give Peace A Chance'. Remember love. The only hope for any of us is peace. Violence begets violence." (Quoted in The Beatles: An Oral History by Pritchard and Lysaght)

"We're trying to sell peace, like a product, you know and sell it like people sell soap or soft drinks. And it's the only way to get people aware that peace is possible, and it isn't just inevitable to have violence. Not just war - all forms of violence." (Interview on The David Frost Show, 1969)

"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." (Quoted in Pax Patter at Australian Broadcasting Corporation.)

"When it gets down to having to use violence, then you are playing the system's game. The establishment will irritate you - pull your beard, flick your face - to make you fight." (During the Bed-In for Peace, 1969)

Art

"I wouldn't say I was a born writer; I'm a born thinker." (Quoted in The Beatles Anthology, 2000)

"My role in society - or any artist or poet's role - is to try to express what we all feel. Not to tell people how to feel, not as a leader, but as a reflection of us all." (Quoted in The Beatles Anthology, 2000)
