Andrew Wiles and Fermat's Last Theorem

Andrew Wiles (1953-) is an English mathematician best known for proving Fermat's Last Theorem. Wikipedia says,
"Starting in mid-1986, based on successive progress of the previous few years of Gerhard Frey, Jean-Pierre Serre and Ken Ribet, it became clear that Fermat's Last Theorem could be proved as a corollary of a limited form of the modularity theorem (unproved at the time and then known as the 'Taniyama-Shimura-Weil conjecture')... In June 1993, [Wiles] presented his proof to the public for the first time at a conference in Cambridge." (Wikipedia: Andrew Wiles, 8.6.21 UTC 23:20)
The rest of this post is some quotes from Wiles.

Mathematics

"Perhaps I could best describe my experience of doing mathematics in terms of entering a dark mansion. You go into the first room and it's dark, completely dark. You stumble around, bumping into the furniture. Gradually you learn where each piece of furniture is. And finally after six months or so, you find the light switch and turn it on. Suddenly, it's all illuminated and you can see exactly where you were." (AZQuotes.com)

"Some mathematics problems look simple, and you try them for a year or so, and then you try them for a hundred years, and it turns out that they're extremely hard to solve. There's no reason why these problems shouldn't be easy, and yet they turn out to be extremely intricate." (AZQuotes.com)

Christiaan Huygens and certainty

Photo source: Wikimedia Commons, Caspar Netscher

Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) was a Dutch mathematician best known for his contributions to optics, astronomy and pendulum clocks. Professor Joella Yoder said,
"[Horologium Oscillatorium] is the first modern treatise in which a physical problem is idealized by a set of parameters then analyzed mathematically. It is one of the seminal works of applied mathematics." (Christiaan Huygens: Book on the Pendulum Clock)
The rest of this post is some quotes from Huygens.

Certainty

"I believe that we do not know anything for certain, but everything probably. " (Letter to Pierre Perrault, 1673)

"There are many degrees of probable, some nearer truth than others, in the determining of which lies the chief exercise of our judgement." (Cosmotheoros, 1695-1698)

"One finds in this subject a kind of demonstration which does not carry with it so high a degree of certainty as that employed in geometry; and which differs distinctly from the method employed by geometers in that they prove their propositions by well-established and incontrovertible principles, while here principles are tested by inferences which are derivable from them." (Treatise on Light, 1690)

Kurt Gödel and the philosophy of mathematics

Kurt Gödel (1906-1978) was an Austrian-German logician best known for his incompleteness theorems in the philosophy of mathematics. Physicist Freeman Dyson said,
"Fifty years ago Gödel... proved that the world of pure mathematics is inexhaustible. No finite set of axioms and rules of inference can ever encompass the whole of mathematics." (Infinite in All Directions, 1988)
The rest of this post is a quote from Gödel.

Incompleteness theorem

"The development of mathematics toward greater precision has led, as is well known, to the formalization of large tracts of it, so that one can prove any theorem using nothing but a few mechanical rules... One might therefore conjecture that theses axioms and rules of inference are sufficient to decide any mathematical question that can at all be formally expressed in these systems. It will be shown below that this is not the case, that on the contrary there are in the two systems mentioned relatively simple problems in the theory of integers that cannot be decided on the basis of the axioms." (AZquotes.com)

Paul Erdős and prime numbers

Paul Erdős (1913-1996) was a Hungarian mathematician best known for his contributions to discrete mathematics. Mathematician Bela Bollobas said,
"Erdos knows about more problems than anybody else, and he not only knows about various problems and conjectures, but he also knows the tastes of various mathematicians." (N Is a Number: A Portrait of Paul Erdos, 1993)
Mathematician Richard Guy said,
"Erdos lived on the road, traveling from conference to conference, owning nothing but math notebooks and a suitcase or two." (The Mules that Angels Ride, 2005)
The rest of this post is some quotes from Erdős.

Prime numbers

"It will be another million years, at least, before we understand the primes." (AZQuotes.com)

"God may not play dice with the universe, but something strange is going on with prime numbers." (AZQuotes.com)

Beauty

"Why are numbers beautiful? It's like asking why Beethoven's Ninth Symphony beautiful. If you don't see why, someone can't tell you. I know numbers are beautiful. If they aren't beautiful, nothing is." (AZQuotes.com)

Alexander Grothendieck and form

Alexander Grothendieck (1928-2014) was a German-French mathematician best known for his contributions to algebraic geometry. Mathematician Michael Atiyah said,
"No one but Grothendieck could have taken on algebraic geometry in the full generality he adopted and seen it through to success. It required courage, even daring, total self confidence and immense powers of concentration and hard work." (Michael Atiyah Collected Works: 2002-2013)
Mathematician Amir Aczel said,
"Alexander Grothendieck was very different from Weil in the way he approached mathematics: Grothendieck was nto just a mathematician who could understand the discipline and prove important results - he was a man who could create mathematics. And he did it alone." (The Artist and the Mathematician, 2009)
The rest of this post is some quotes from Grothendieck.

Research

"I am not really doing research, just trying to cultivate myself." (AZQuotes.com)

"Discovery is the privilege of the child: the child who has no fear of being once again wrong, of looking like an idiot, of not being serious, of not doing things like everyone else." (AZQuotes.com)

Form

"If there is one thing in mathematics that fascinates me more than anything else (and doubtless always has), it is neither 'number' nor 'size', but always form... the one that fascinates me more than any other and continues to fascinate me, is the structure hidden in mathematical things." (AZQuotes.com)
